At the end of August, Key Dives stepped up its cleanup efforts with a Dive Against Debris “Trash Trek” followed by a turtle release. During the all-day affair, the dive shop, which has collected over 11,000 pound of marine debris off local reefs since it started cleanups in 2018, visited “neglected reefs” that had probably never been cleaned before. They found old anchors, chains, line and trap debris — 519 pounds in total.

Reef Check Brunei, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), recently organised a ghost net removal dive to promote Dive Against Debris surveys under the Project Aware initiative in the country.

PADI® and the Project AWARE® team are joining forces to empower people everywhere to carry the torch for ocean protection with the third annual AWARE Week. Taking place 19-27 September 2020, AWARE Week will encourage the global dive community to lead or take part in conservation activities and courses for a clean and healthy ocean. AWARE Week will provide opportunities to support ocean health, fins off and fins on, in a variety of ways so anyone can get involved in whatever capacity they can during these times.
