I’m a PADI professional (Master Instructor) documentary maker and writer on the topic of sea culture. I’m also an activist leader for environmental causes. I live in the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve, where some waste from human activity goes to the sea, due to the lack of education and environmental laws. The deterioration of the coastal and marine ecosystems is clear to everyone, but humans have the ability and technology for reducing the effects. 

I am a scuba instructor and was working on a live aboard dive boat for a couple years and loved being so close to the ocean. When I started noticing how much it was changing and seeing how even small changes to the environment affect the marine life, I felt the need to do something to protect it.

Conservation groups are calling for answers and action in relation to the landing in Turkey of 30 Giant Devil Rays in contravention of Mediterranean agreements to protect the Endangered species.

I like to think of myself as a maturing, responsible citizen-steward of our ocean planet.  While I have been an avid scuba diver for many, many years, I have only recently become more active in terms of our environment.  And seeing the difference that a small group of dedicated divers can make will make enthusiasts of many!

My love for the ocean started back in my sophomore year of high school when I got scuba certified. Having visited the ocean before, and now, being able to see beneath the waves, I truly loved its beauty. But, I didn't have a true understanding of how much help our oceans really needed until I had an amazing environmental science teacher explain to me the severity of the issues our oceans are experiencing. I knew at that moment that I would dedicate my education and my career to helping solve these problems.

Sharks and rays are facing increased risk of extinction. There is no magic “silver bullet” that will solve all the very serious threats of overfishing and habitat loss that sharks and rays face, but responsible tourism practices can certainly help.
