Valentine’s Day is around the corner and ocean love is in the air at the local markets in Queensland Australia. Avid scuba diver Helen Mayo loves everything about the ocean and so this year her new business Ocean Adornments was born.  Helen has already been out and about at markets in Australia showcasing her beautiful jewellery and promoting AWARE’s 10 Tips for Divers to Protect the Ocean Planet.

Scuba divers jumped into the new year with a splash taking on a fit, fun and healthy Finathon challenge. What a great way to begin 2014. A Finathon is the perfect incentive to get fit, feel good and raise funds for your favourite ocean icon – the shark.

Utila Dive Centre is more than a premier PADI Career Development Centre in Central America and the Caribbean, they pride themselves on their marine ecology training and activities to protect the ocean.

We’re on the cutting edge of training and conservation, setting a standard for many dive operations and professionals in the region,” said Andy Phillips, Director of Professional Training at Utila Dive Centre proudly declares.

How do you support ocean conservation where you live and teach scuba diving miles away from the sea? Robert Soncini, PADI Pro and safety diver at the prestigious Cirque du Soleil show “O” in Las Vegas USA, answered this question by joining the 100% AWARE program and the growing number of partners who are putting ocean protection at the heart of their dive business.

They did! More than 50,000 runners finished the 2013 ING New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 3, making this years race the largest marathon ever. Among them, a team of passionate divers, shark lovers and competitive runners crossed the finish line in support of shark conservation.
“I'm so ecstatic that we did it! All of us finished and had a great time,” exclaims Kendra Bolt who established Project AWARE as a Charity Partner for the ING New York City Marathon in 2012.

‘Project Aware’ is een wereldwijde campagne van en voor duikers die ijveren voor een propere omgeving onder de waterspiegel. Onder het motto ‘begin in je eigen vijver’, maakten zo’n dertig duikers van vier clubs het zwemgedeelte van de Blaarmeersen schoon. Ze haalden naar schatting zeventig kilogram afval op.

Jaarlijks maken de duikers van het duikteam van Dive Post uit Zoetermeer de Noord Aa schoon. Afgelopen zondag was het weer zover. Op een prachtige dag zochten 20 duikers onderwater naar allerlei afval, die daar niet thuis hoort. Ook de omgeving langs de waterkant is onderhanden genomen. Lege flesjes bier en tennisballen behoorden tot de hoogste scores. Wel bleek dat het duikpark door vorige schoonmaakacties redelijk schoon is geworden. Dus volgend jaar moet de overkant maar eens aan de beurt komen!

Staff and students from Nottingham Trent University in the UK embarked on an expedition to Blue Bay, Mauritius, to carry out surveys as part of the marine and terrestrial research of Dr. Nicholas Ray and Mr. Graham Shelbourne.
