Divers Down Against Debris - Grand Cayman clean-up

updates

On Sunday 1st March 2015 the staff of Divers Down in Grand Cayman were joined by 10 volunteers in conducting a 2-tank clean-up dive trip. The 2 dives were done on sites in the George Town area that are not only popular with SCUBA divers, but also extremely popular with snorkel excursions from the Cruise ships due to their close proximity to the port.

Using equipment supplied by Divers Down and collection bags supplied by Project AWARE we embarked on our debris collection dives, arriving firstly at Cheeseburger Reef and then moving to the Wreck of the Cali for the second dive.

Unfortunately, the dives seemed to be quite successful. I say this because we recovered a lot of trash which I would have preferred was not there to begin with, the best debris dives are the ones where we return with nothing!

Thanks to our volunteers there are 590 less harmful items in our waters. 440 of which were plastic, 11 glass, 48 metal, 8 rubber, 39 cloth, 4 wood, 17 paper and 23 mixed materials. So in all, it was an awesome effort by the team....one of whom even found a $1 note - so it literally 'pays' to get involved!

A huge thank you to Jane, Ed, Karen, Petro, Traci, Colleen, David, Sheri, Walter and Randy for your time and effort.
