Dive against debris at Safari Lodge Divers, Nananu-I-Ra,Fiji

Beach cleanup and splash for trash hosted on the 15th September

On the 15th September 2012 Safari Lodge Divers hosted the dive against debris and survey on Nananu-I-Ra, Fiji. Sixteen volunteers from the town of Rakiraki joined safari Lodge Divers in the great beach clean-up mission.  Thirteen of these volunteers were local Fijian children aged between the ages of five-sixteen.

Team leader Michelle Allen, manager of Safari Lodge Divers started the event with a conservation and safety briefing supported by Clint Coombs, also manager and Jasper Meagher, divemaster. After the briefing everyone headed off sweeping the east side of the island for all trash.

The beach clean-up team collected 37 bags, 26 that were filled with plastic bottles! Safari Lodge Divers have been encouraging the use of their refilling station to solve this debris problem.

From the data collected it seems that we need more filling stations in Fiji, think if you started a filling station where people could refill their plastic bottles there would be a lot less plastic in the trash!

Volunteers were rewarded with a barbeque at Safari Lodge hosted by Stephanie Cone and Warren Francis. After a good feed by all, volunteers joined Clint Coombs and Jasper Meagher for a splash for trash on the shore line of the east side of the island. Before leaving on a boat back to the mainland provided by safari lodge all volunteers enjoyed playing with kayaks and paddles boards.
