Teaching is Learning, and Vice Versa

10 tips for divers, project aware, philippines, el nido, palawan, jon-jon suarez
updates

One of the things I really enjoy about my job is I get to meet people from all over the world, from all walks of life. I've met teachers, students, engineers, musicians, grandparents, little kids, business magnates, models, journalists, firefighters, and so many more. I never thought I would encounter such a diverse group on a daily basis.

But there's something that ties all of them together, and it's curiosity. Each person is curious about our planet in general, and the marine environment in particular, but also about something very basic like what it feels like to breathe underwater. They just want to learn more about themselves and the world around them.

Our student divers' receptiveness to new information is what makes being an instructor so joyful and fulfilling. Whenever I discuss the 10 Tips for Divers to Protect the Ocean Planet with them, for example, I can see how they come to the realization that the 10 Tips are a summary of everything we are trying to teach them, and a guide for what kind of divers they should strive to become.

I've found that the 10 Tips for Divers really helps me connect with people. Not only do I use it as a teaching tool, but it's also a way for my divers to tell me more about themselves. Each person has a story which connects to a tip. Jermaine is starting to get into underwater photography, so "Take Only Photos - Leave Only Bubbles" resonates for him. Alex challenges himself by constantly experimenting with the amount of weights he needs when he dives, and is on his way to becoming a buoyancy expert. When choosing a travel destination, Joonyoung researches whether the facilities are comfortable but also eco-friendly.

Yes, curiosity motivates me, too. I want to know more about the people I cross paths with. I'm teaching them about diving and the environment, but at the same time I'm also learning about the things that are important for them and integrating them into my own life. So I'm taking this opportunity to thank everyone. Keep diving, keep learning!
