Successful Dive Against Debris Survey by Dive Team Abyss

Abyss Scuba Diving divers with Marine Debris from a Dive Against Debris Survey
updates

Abyss Scuba Diving Club members Dive Team Abyss hosted a great Dive Against Debris Survey on Sunday 5th March at The Monument (including Sutherland Point) Kurnell in Kamay Bay National Park. Kurnell is one of our favourite dive locations for our regular guided shore dives, the home of the weedy sea dragon and location of our Crayweed Project.

Seventeen divers, including staff, divers undertaking internships, those preparing for their Instructor Development Course (including our DM / BBQ guy), weekend regulars and welcome guests were involved with the double shore dive and BBQ, collecting two large 5kg bags of marine debris for the dives. The first dive was predominantly debris search and recovery and the second dive was a normal looking-at-sea-creatures dive where debris was collected if spotted. The event was a great exposure to the Dive Against Debris surveys for the divers, either as a dedicated clean-up or part of a normal dive and 'not letting our dives go to waste'. The divers and everyone involved felt rewarded by the positive outcome in removing 10kg of debris at one of our regular dive sites that if left could cause exponential damage.

One common post-dive activity includes divers sharing photos and observations of unusual marine creatures spotted on a dive, 'What on earth was that?!' After sorting and recording the marine debris and getting a first hand sense of the amount and types of debris, some divers could be asking 'How on earth did that get there?' Hopefully some of our marine creature buddies can get some debris ID slates so that they can ask 'What on earth is that?' rather than eating it or getting caught on it. See our survey data for more details on the marine debris collected.

Yours in great diving,

Stephen Guy
