Reducing the impact of our hotel and diving operations

updates

We are working towards making Camel Hotel and our diving operations more environmentally friendly. Examples of work we have completed in this area include:

  • As of May 25, 2018, all Camel Food & Beverage outlets are plastic straw FreeCamel BarPomodoro restaurants and Vanilla Cafe are only providing stainless straws on request.
  • Introducing an innovative solar heating system for our swimming pool. During winter, this enables us to keep the pool at a comfortable temperature for diver training, without consuming large amounts of electricity.
  • Replacing plastic bags with paper and biodegradable bags cross our whole operation.
  • Installing waste bins at Naama Bay jetty to prevent rubbish from ending up in the water.
  • Introducing re-usable caps for our tanks, to replace ‘tank tape’ (‘cap on’ indicates a full tank, ‘cap off’ an empty tank).
  • Introducing re-usable water bottle system. Guests on board are provided with one bottle of water and a water bottle cover with a number (made from up cycled wetsuits). Guests are then encouraged to drink as much as possible to stay hydrated in the beautiful sunshine of Sharm el Sheikh and once their bottle is empty, to refill it from the chilled water cooler on the dive deck.
  • Installing double glazed windows at Camel Hotel rooms as opposed to the standard single glazed. This helps maintain a low noise level but more importantly when we are discussing the environment; it helps to maintain an even temperature in the rooms, therefore making air-conditioning units in every room more energy efficient.
  • Our boat Camel Tribe is the first daily boat of its kind in Sharm el Sheikh. One of the unique features is that all the onboard electronics are powered by a solar powered generation system. On the rare occasion that the sun is not so strong, for example in the early morning, an alternator from one of the engines is used as a backup. The boat’s septic tank means that effluents will not be pumped into the water whilst on a mooring and there is also an energy-efficient fresh air inlet system, designed to keep the lower saloon cool.
  • Replaced older IT equipment that has a higher power consumption, with newer more efficient models.

There is always room for improvement but we have already received some awards for our efforts so far: PADI Green Star Award, Project AWARE Environmental Achievement AwardProject AWARE Certificate of RecognitionClean Sharm Award and Virgin Holiday Responsible Tourism Award.
