PADI IDC Indonesia World Ocean Day Cleanup in the Gili Islands with Industry Leading PADI CD Holly Macleod

PADI IDC Komodo-Gili Local Community Clean Up
updates

For “World Ocean Day” this year, Multiple Award Winning Industry Leading Platinum PADI Course Director Holly Macleod scheduled a “Dive against Debris” Program. All 17 PADI Instructor Development Candidates participated and were given the option of completing the Dive against Debris Instructor PADI Certification.

So firstly the reason to choose to do a Dive against Debris is basically derived from the fact that Indonesia is the world’s second-biggest marine polluter after China, and is predicted to be discarding 3.22 million metric tons of waste annually means that the Gili Islands provide the perfect destination for an organized underwater clean up. As the rain pounds down on banana leaves and rice fields in neighboring Lombok, the rivers fill up and irrigation systems overflow. With it, the water masses bring trash in bulk: anything from food wrappers and plastic bags to bottles and other domestic waste and find its way into the sea so the Gili Islands prove to be the best possible place to prevent this trash from making it further. Tourism is also itself a massive contributor to the global problem and the Gili Islands are right at the top of the list for the majority of travelers. Currently seeing over 9.7 million tourists visiting Indonesia and with a plan to attract over 20 million by 2020, the marine environment can only be seen as the obvious victim in this scenario. The actual dive itself was arranged around the PADI IDC and took place directly after an In Water training workshop.
