A little help from a fisherman

Last week we got a tip from a local fisherman about a popular site for lobster fishing. He was worried that there were lobster pots and ghost nets lying on the bottom, harming or killing marine life.

Today the fisherman took us out to the site in his boat for a quick scout. We got ready with our dive equipment, mesh bags, scissors, knives and a lifting bag. We had limited time to check out the site so we had to limit the dive to the immediate area. In just a couple of minutes we had found four lobster pots. They were not attached to any lines or bouys so we decided to recover them. Luckily all the hatches were open and no animals were trapped inside this time.

I am very glad that we can work together with fishermen to find and recover traps and nets. It gives us the opportunity to find ghost nets and traps on sites where we normally do not dive. Hopefully this will be the first of many dives in co-operation with local fishermen. Afterall, none of us wants to see fish, crustaceans, seals or sea birds trapped and dead in the ocean.
