Indonesian Government Seriously Fighting Marine Debris

On 17 September 2018, Indonesian President Mr. Joko Widodo issued a Presidential Rule on Marine Debris Management. The Presidential Rule number 83/ 2018 clearly pointed out the threat of marine debris for ocean and human well being and sets out a National Action Plan to Fight Marine Debris for the period of 2018 - 2025.

The 2018-2025 Action Plan in fighting marine debris emphasized the followings:

  1. National movement to raise awareness for stakeholders;
  2. Management of on land sources of debris;
  3. Prevention of debris on coastlines and the seas;
  4. Mechanisms for funding, institutional strengthening, supervision, law enforcement, and;
  5. Research and development

For the implementation of this Presidential Rule, a National Coordinating Team for Marine Debris Management will be formed, which will be responsible directly to the President. The team will be led by the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs, and Minister of Environment and Forestry as the daily executive.

This Presidential Rule has been in effect as of 21 September 2018.
