FRESH NEW MANGROVES IN MOALBOAL

Beach Clean Up and Mangrove Planting
updates

To help preserve Moalboal's coastlines and the goals of Project AWARE®, Savedra Dive Center, Cebu Fun Divers, Cebu Seaview Resort and local groups Alpha Kappa Rho, Moalboal Chapter joined forces for a community service day at Moalboal Seaside Park.

We first cleared five large bags of rubbish from the existing mangrove area. Our groups then showed great team work and production line efficiency by planting 500 mangroves within two hours.

Mangroves are tropical forests that thrive in salt water, forming a canopy with the atmosphere and extensive roots in the sediment of the intertidal zone — the area that is above water at low tide and underwater at high tide. Scientists refer to them as "blue" carbon ecosystems, in contrast to "green" carbon ecosystems on land, such as forests and grasslands. They serve many important functions, including water filtration, prevention of coastal erosion, coastal protection from storms, carbon storage, food, timber, and livelihood provision, and biodiversity protection, among others.

We hope to show the local villages that each individual can make a difference and we can make our ocean healthy with more marine life for the future.
