Dive Against Debris with Ocean Angel

On February 5th 2025 I joined Michelle (AKA Ocean Angel) from Excel Scuba, Tenerife. We wanted to do a Dive Against Debris dive from their local beach Playa De La Pinta. This beach is Tourist hot spot and is situated directly outside of a marina.
This proved to be an excellent opportunity to survey the underwater debris and gain an insight into the impact local tourism and its location near a marina would be.
During the 52 minute dive we managed to clean up over 14 kilos of debris, although we did find an old carpet that made up a considerable amount of that weight.
Despite finding the usual debris like fishing lines and discarded rope, which was expected as we were close to a marina. My surprise was the amount of small plastic children’s toys we found.
All in all, I had a fantastic dive and I admire the work Michelle AKA Ocean Angel and Excel Scuba do for the local environment as well as the awareness they bring to the local area.
This goes to show that every Dive Against Debris dive, there are always surprises and useful insights into where the debris is coming from.
With this insight and through education perhaps one day there will be no more need for beach clean ups. But until then, I’ll be joining Michelle and the team from Excel Scuba at every opportunity.
