Dive Against Debris - Fishermans Bay
Despite the name, this bay on Tiritiri Matangi Island in New Zealand is almost free of debris. With many recreational fishermen enjoying our Hauraki Gulf marine park, it is not uncommon to see fishing line washed up on shore, sinkers and rope on the seafloor and even entangled wildlife.
Just three months ago we removed hundreds of meters of fishing line from a nearby wharf called Ti-Point. Even after an underwater clean two years prior, Ti-Point is still clearly affected by marine debris.
Fishermans Bay, however, did not appear to have one snagged line anywhere. We geared up at 9am to catch the slack water and to avoid the afternoon wind. We ventured out with the new Auckland boat charter 'Get In, Go Dive'
In less than half an hour we were at the dive site, ready to get geared up and get in.
We came out with an outstanding three pieces of trash!
We were so pleased that the site was near debris free, however, as all the items found were previously used for fishing, our claim that the Hauraki Gulf is effected by recreational fishing was supported by our findings.
We arrived home in time for lunch and were all buzzing from the day. Massive thank you to everyone who came, and of course, Paul our skipper for the day.
