Conservation techniques meet Ocean protection by diving against debris!

This is what we do at Scuba Center Asia every day! We are lucky to dive almost every day, in the beautiful clear water around Nusa Lembongan in Bali, Indonesia. The corals here are healthy and bring in the most amazing marine life but unfortunately rubbish also surround the islands.

Rubbish or better know as debris comes from everywhere. Not only from our island, but also get carried by the ocean currents. Sometimes there is no debris found in the water and sometimes there is a lot of debris found in the ocean around the Nusa islands. At Scuba Center Asia, we pickup debris find during a dive every single dive. Besides that, we also make a monthly event in where guest divers can join our Dive Against Debris as a social event!

On the March 5th it was that time and we took the opportunity to make an impact. Our Divemaster candidates at that time prepared the briefings and made sure all guest and staff divers knew what to do during the dive against debris.

One of our famous divesites around Nusa Penida is Manta Bay, plus it is the divesite that Scuba Center Asia adopted as part of the Adopt A Divesite program. In where Scuba Center Asia is committed to tackling the ocean trash for this dive site in particular. During the dive against debris the teams covered the area by using a U-patterns. A large portion of the rubbis we found was located closer to the surface so we needed to cut our bottom time down in order to remove as much as debris as possible. After the dive the team continued with snorkling teams to collect as much as surface debris out of the water.

In the end the teams collected 64 food wrappers, 152 pieces of plastic wrap, 44 small beverage bottles, 2 large beverage bottles, a bucket, 5 lids, 1 diaper, 2 fishing lines, 3 pieces of foam, 1 rope, 2 plastic sheets, 2 straws, 1 battery, 8 weird plastic fragments and a pice of clothing. All small pieces of plastic together in total was approximately 5 kilograms of unwanted debris from our ocean!

Besides that, we saw happy Mantas diving with us and cleaned our beautiful ocean!

So yes, by doing these clean up dives we protect our ocean giants at the same time! Conservation techniques meet Ocean protection!
