Save Our Sanctuaries - Your Action Needed

Project AWARE News

Back in 2012, I watched history being made. Australia created the world’s largest network of marine sanctuaries, protecting some of our most iconic dive sites like Osprey and Bouganville Reefs in the Coral Sea, Lord Howe Island NSW, Geographe Bay and Two Rocks WA.

Divers everywhere responded to our calls to action by sending submissions, lobbying and sharing the news across the globe. It was an exciting moment in history; a renewed optimism for the future of marine sanctuaries worldwide.

However two and half years on, our hard fought battles are under threat. After 15 years of extensive scientific investigation, and the most thorough public consultation process in Australia’s history, we’re seeing significant and serious roll backs which threaten to undermine the hard work we’ve done as well as putting our marine life at risk.

These parks, that you helped put in place, were due to come into effect on 1st July 2014. But back in December 2013 the newly elected Australian Government put the parks at risk for cut backs or erased completely. The Government suspended the national network and begun a costly and unnecessary review.

Now, the public consultation is open again for all Australians to have their say.

Add your personal view and help #SaveOurSanctuaries

We have until 31st March to share our views and help secure protection in areas that need it most.

Marine protected areas can work. When properly managed they help ensure we fish for the future and are major assets to the dive industry, local businesses and tourism.

Thanks to thousands of Australians we’ve helped create the world's largest network of marine sanctuaries. Now we must finish what we’ve started. Australians have a deep connection to the ocean – the majority of our population live by the coast. We surf, dive and spend our time on the beach or in the water. We have access to some of the world’s most iconic dive sites, exploring marine life and diversity which is second to none.

We can make a difference today. Don’t let our hard work go to waste. Have your say – respond to the public consultation by 31st March. #SaveOurSanctuaries
