NYC Marathon Inspiration
The Project AWARE New York Marathon Team not only performed an incredible feat of athleticism and endurance in freezing temperatures - but together raised more than $22,000 to support global shark protection.
On 2 November 2014, the nine members of the Project AWARE “Run for Sharks” Team were part of the 50,000 runners to participate in the 44th annual New York City Marathon. The event has been described as a 26.2 mile block party through the world’s most diverse city, New York City, USA. This year’s marathon is especially exciting as the one millionth marathon finisher was named.
Run a marathon with a broken toe? “I’m still doing it!” exclaimed Liz Parkinson, the Project AWARE Marathon Team Leader for 2014. “Even if I have to walk. Anything for the sharks!”
Wonder why Liz is so dedicated to the marathon? “I am in the lucky position where I get to work a lot with sharks. By being a part of the Run for Sharks Team, I can help raise money for a cause that I believe in. One of the cool things about Run for Sharks is that you do not need to be a diver or even live by the ocean to be a part of the cause. This gives people who enjoy being outside and active the opportunity to not only help fundraise but also educate others.”
The remarkable resolve of the marathon team doesn’t end there. “ Thank you for the amazing opportunity and experience! I loved every minute of it!” buzzed Beth Connors on race day.
Project AWARE is so grateful for the dedication of the Run For Sharks Team and pleased that all the fundraisers had a fun and safe run. Thank you all for your incredible support which precedes and supports Project AWARE’s work to protect sharks and rays including recent historic advances in shark and ray conservation.
