Alliances

International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) - Project AWARE is an International Non-government Organization member of IUCN, the world’s oldest and largest global environmental network. IUCN, home of the Red List of Threatened Species, is a democratic membership union with more than 1,000 government and NGO member organizations, and almost 11,000 volunteer scientists in more than 160 countries. 

Shark League For the Atlantic and Mediterranean - In 2017, we joined forces with Shark Advocates International, the Shark Trust and Ecology Action to form the Shark League. The Shark League is focused on safeguarding sharks through Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs). Sharks are among the oceans’ most vulnerable yet under‐protected animals. Sharks in the Atlantic and Mediterranean are particularly at risk. We urgently need to protect them from overfishing and finning. 

International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) - As an NGO member of ICRI, Project AWARE supports the implementation of relevant international conventions and agreements by governments, international organizations, and non-government organizations to preserve coral reefs and related ecosystems. Project AWARE’s policy work focuses on the role of sharks in coral reef environments and protection of coral reefs habitats from the devastating effects of marine debris. 

Global Partnership for Marine Litter - Launched in June of 2012 at Rio+20, the Global Partnership for Marine Litter (GPML) seeks to protect human health and the global environment by reducing marine litter. By working with partners in government, academia, the public and private sector, Project AWARE contributes to the alliance goal by engaging divers in debris solutions and sharing the information reported through Project AWARE’s Dive Against Debris™ program to help reduce its impacts globally.

Trash Free Seas - Spearheaded by the Ocean Conservancy, the Trash Free Seas Alliance® unites industry, science and conservation leaders who share a common goal for a healthy ocean free of trash. As a founding member of the Alliance, Project AWARE is working with corporations, economists, waste experts, and other non-governmental organizations to identify ways for communities to profitably gather, separate, sell and store plastic waste and prevent it from entering the ocean.

Global Ghost Gear Initiative - Founded in 2015 by World Animal Protection, the Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI) is a cross-sectoral alliance committed to driving solutions to the problem of lost and abandoned fishing gear (ghost gear) worldwide. The GGGI aims to improve the health of marine ecosystems, protect marine animals, and safeguard human health and livelihoods by working globally and locally to build evidence, defining best practices and informing policies, and catalyzing and replicating solutions. As part of the alliance, Project AWARE contributes ghost gear data reported by Dive Against Debris® volunteers, helping build evidence of the issue to define best practices and inform policy change.

Seas at Risk - Seas At Risk is an umbrella organisation of environmental NGOs from across Europe that promotes ambitious policies for marine protection at European and international level. As a member, Project AWARE is working alongside other Alliance members to ensure that EU governments take marine litter seriously and commit to implementing the most effective measures to tackle the problem.
   
Save Our Marine Life - Save Our Marine Life is a growing community of people, organisations and businesses working to protect Australia’s unique marine life, safeguard our healthy coastal lifestyle and save the new national network of marine sanctuaries. Supported by an alliance of 27 leading conservation groups, including Project AWARE, Save Our Marine Life has acted on behalf of millions of supporters to protect huge areas of our marine environment around the globe. 

Boomerang Alliance - As a member of the Boomerang Alliance, Project AWARE works with other leading environmental groups for zero waste in Australia. The Alliance's main campaign is for a national Container Deposit Scheme to place a value on used drinks containers and encourage recycling. Australians use almost 13 billion drinks containers a year, of which only around 40% are recycled. The remainder is littered or dumped in landfill. Worldwide, similar schemes have reduced the energy, water and raw materials needed to create new containers and created thousands of new jobs, in addition to leading to a cleaner environment.

CMS Sharks MoU - Project AWARE is a cooperating partner of the Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation of Migratory Sharks (Sharks MOU) which aims to achieve and maintain a favourable conservation status for migratory sharks based on the best available scientific information and taking into account the socio-economic value of these species for the people in various countries.

The Reef-World Foundation (Green Fins) and Project AWARE
The Reef-World Foundation and Project AWARE recognize the value of collaboration and the combining of voices in order to achieve their conservation mission. The Reef-World Foundation works with the UN Environment to lead global implementation of the Green Fins initiative; providing the only internationally recognized environmental standards for the scuba diving and snorkelling industry. Reef-World’s work drives improvements in environmentally friendly scuba diving and snorkelling practices to reduce local pressures on coral reefs, helping to make corals healthier and more resilient to other stresses such as climate change effects. Together, we collaborate with PADI to inspire a global change in attitude and behavior for the protection of ocean life. Since many Green Fins and Project AWARE goals complement each other, supporting Project AWARE conservation programs and initiatives, and following Project AWARE's 10 Tips for Divers to Protect the Ocean Planet help dive centers and dive professionals towards meeting the requirements of the Green Fins membership and environmental standards.
