After the party comes the cleaning

updates

Last week I created an event within the Action Zone area of Project Aware in order to showcase a great initiative that took place in Salvador, Brazil, focused on the cleaning of marine debris resulted from the Carnival season.

The initiative organized by the diving school Galeao Sacramento and directed by Mr. Bruno Rocha (www.galeaosacramento.com.br), counted with the participation of approximately 20 divers. “An urgent action was needed and this was the best way we found to return the nature all the benefits it brings to us and also to increase the awareness towards this topic, encouraging a change on people’s habits”, Rocha says.

It was collected over 3 thousand pounds of debris, including cans, plastic bottles, cloth, tires, and pieces of a refrigerator!

“We want to generate a scientific knowledge with the results from this action, by showcasing these results to the population in order to alert them on the problems caused by the pollution and therefore increase ecological consciousness. “, Rocha explains.
