Several years ago, dive instructor Rich Hopkins witnessed something that has stuck with him to this day. While diving in Woahink Lake in Oregon, United States, he became startled by a large object that was strikingly out-of-place in the underwater environment: a large household recliner chair that had been dumped by a local community member. Every time he dived that site, the sight of the submerged recliner irritated him to no end. He had no idea how to get it out of the lake, or if he did, what to do with it. Over time, he noticed more and more trash in his beloved lake. He resolved to take action.

Conservationists are delighted that CITES* Parties have officially listed devil rays, thresher sharks, and the silky shark under CITES Appendix II. The listing proposals were supported by more than the two-thirds majority required for adoption in Committee on Monday, and finalized today in Plenary.

In a highly anticipated Committee session today, proposals to list devil rays, thresher sharks, and the silky shark under CITES* were supported by more than the two-thirds of voting Parties required for adoption. Conservationists are delighted yet mindful that Committee decisions must still be confirmed in the final CITES plenary session later this week.

A new study published in the journal Scientific Reports is sounding alarm bells about the extinction risk for devil rays, just as countries around the world gather to consider regulating international trade of these species.
