Since 2014, #OurOcean conferences, have invited world leaders to look forward and respond, delivering high-level commitments and transforming the challenges ahead into an opportunity for cooperation, innovation and entrepreneurship. The 2017 edition “An Ocean for Life” is hosted by the European Union in Malta, at the heart of the Mediterranean. Project AWARE will be there to advocate for the ocean and marine debris specifically.

The new Sea Choice report reveals that seafood eco-certifications by two prominent organizations are falling short.

Conservation groups are calling for national and international protections for shortfin mako sharks based on a new scientific assessment that finds the North Atlantic population has been depleted and is continuing to be seriously overfished. The shortfin mako – the world’s fastest shark -- is sought for meat, fins, and sport, but most fishing countries impose no limits on catch. An upcoming international fisheries meeting presents a critical opportunity to protect the species.
