Over the past year here in Kamadhoo we have begun our coral restoration in an effort to help combat the issue of climate change, improve coral life in our area, and begin the process of citizen science. In our house reef we have introduced 22 coral frames, each frame holding around 16 different coral fragments mostly consisting of various kinds of branching corals. The fragments were transplanted from a nearby reef to the frames. Currently, the coral has grown from just 2cm all the way to 10cm. For the Americans it has grown from a short base of 1 inch all the way to 4 inches in just over one year. We have been inspecting the frames since the start of our program bi-weekly (every two weeks), mostly checking on coral stability and growth. Over the course of the year, aside from the growth of the corals we have also observed more fish aggregating in the reefs indicating that the reefs growth is helping fight back climate change. In the future we plan to add more frames with more coral (hopefully some other kinds), stay tuned to see more updates!
