Hi guys and gals,

On Sunday 4th March 10am we are organising a Dive Against Debris® Survey Event at Gunnamatta Bay, Cronulla. We have planned two dives and a BBQ, and will be sorting and recording the debris collected and uploading the data to our My Ocean profile on the Project AWARE® website. Please book on our dive calendar, all divers are welcome!

Our Dive Against Debris Events in 2017 were very successful, with around 10kg of debris collected at each event, and lots of opportunities to meet other divers and enjoy a BBQ together.  First timers are welcome - see photo from last year’s event,  including Geoff on his first dive after his open water course – Geoff is now an Instructor! We can find a buddy for you if you need one and will have a divemasters in the water to lend a hand. We often pick up plastic bags and other debris on our shore dives, so we hope to spark ongoing interest for our divers to make all their dives a Dive Against Debris.

If you are interested in coming, please read the Dive Against Debris Survey Guide beforehand, which covers a background in Marine Debris, dive activities and post dive activities including sorting, recording and reporting data. Our dive brief will cover survey dive profiles, plans, photography, safety issues and guidelines on items to collect and those to leave behind. Please be familiar with these from the Survey Guide. Get involved in the dives by spotting debris, collecting, taking photos or just come for shore / BBQ support! All divers must have gloves, a dive knife or line cutter. We have some nifty Project AWARE mesh bags to use for the dives, but please bring any mesh bags you have and your camera / go pro.

Project AWARE’s flagship citizen-science program, Dive Against Debris®, empowers scuba divers to remove marine debris from the ocean and report data on the types, quantities and locations of materials collected.  For more information, please check out the Project AWARE website.

Hope you can come, our Dive Against Debris Survey is going to be a great event and a chance for us divers to have a positive impact in a local dive location.

Yours in great diving,

Stephen Guy
