Nearby Penzance and Newlyn are significant local fishing industry locations. Ghost Gear was under-represented by the DAD data from the debris dive, but was massively illustrated by the results of the day's beach clean. A huge quantity was strew on the beach: nets, monofilament line, lures and floats etc. (together with many bags of other rubbish collected up for disposal by our beach cleaners). A local man told us that the nets had been washed up during the storms of early 2014. There is clearly a significant problem here, which was not highlighted at all by the DAD data. This dichotomy emphasises the strong need to be correlating the beneath-shoreline data with that from above, if an accurate picture of the extent of the problem is to be achieved. Please see our photos and film of the event, which illustrate this.

Ghost Gear: Nearby Penzance and Newlyn are centres for the fishing industry in Cornwall.

Plastic bags and fragments of bags: Penzance Bay is shaped such that it is likely to contain much wind-blown debris from the land.

Food wrappers: the beaches in the bay are very popular tourist destinations.
