Twenty-eight divers took part in this year Malaysia Day Dive which happened on 16 September 2014 in Kuching, Malaysia.

This annual event, which is organised by Premier Marine & Scuba Centre, aims to create greater awareness of marine conservation and also unite divers for a cause. This year records the highest participation number since the inception of MDD in 2012, which only saw 14 divers. MDD2014 also saw an increase in debris collected with a record of 184.6kg mainly abandoned fishing nets. This result is triple of last year which is only 65.4kg.  

Removing debris from the wreck was not easy as participants had to consider the depth, current and low visibility. Most of the debris is made out of abandoned fishing nets which can cause entanglement to divers if not handled properly. The challenge continued as they tried to lift the loads up to the surface. While on the surface, the choppy sea is not helpful during the one hour surface interval.

Once the result of the debris collection was released, you can see the joy on all their faces. The sense of achievement is in all their hearts.

This year’s event also saw various support from both private and government bodies such as Permai Rainforest Resort who came in to partially host the divers for the accommodation. Tourism Malaysia Sarawak and Kids Scuba Malaysia assisted throughout the event.
