Dive Against Debris Clean Up + Specialty

updates

Today was the annual Dive Otago Dive Against Debris Clean Up dive combined with a Shore Clean Up.  The dive site we targeted this year was one of our well known and loved shore diving sites - Wellers Rock.  The beach clean up crew hit Pilots beach a nesting ground for the little blue penguins and a place where a lot of NZ Sea Lions come ashore.

The Underwater cleanup crew consisted of an amazing 20divers, some of our keen regular divers but also some new faces that joint us at Wellers for their first time.  The turn out really amazed me - especially with the forecast set to turn pretty nasty.

After a quick briefing and organising of buddy pairs off they all went.  To our relief there wasn't too much rubbish to collect (espeically when you spread it out amoungst all the divers in the water).  It was great to see our local sites weren't too messy.

The find of the day went to Tom, Scott and Callum who found a microwave and the remains of a clothes wardrobe!!!

The beach clean up crew picked up a lot of rubbish and some of which could have really hurt someone if they had stepped on it unwittingly (rusty nails sticking out of wood).   However their find of the day was a bit different - instead of an interesting piece of rubbish it was the Paradise duck chick that had been abandoned by its mother that they rescued and foudn a home for that took the prize.

All in all it was a really successful day and I want to thank everybody who showed up on a not so brilliant Dunedin morning to help us out and to help out the environment!!
