Nova Southeastern University (NSU) is ‘FINatical’ about sharks and joined scuba divers around the world in swimming to end finning.

On Sunday July 28 at the NSU Aquatic Center Competition Pool in Davie, Florida, the NSU Shark community swam 10,000 yards to raise much-needed funds for shark protection!

“Nova Southeastern University is passionate about environmental protection,” says Tec Clark, associate director for aquatics and scuba diving at NSU. “We have the Guy Harvey Research Institute, the Save Our Seas Shark Centre, world-class shark researcher Dr. Mahmood Shivji, and even our mascot is a shark.  This Finathon is another way to show that the NSU Sharks are committed to saving sharks.”

Together, water enthusiasts have a powerful, collective voice to secure protection for endangered shark species worldwide.

“Shark fishing is largely unregulated around the world. Overfishing, bycatch and finning – the slicing of sharks fining and throwing away the body at sea – kills thousands of sharks every day,” added Mahmood Shivji, Ph.D., director of NSU’s Guy Harvey Research Institute at the Oceanographic Center.

The first global Finathon™ is presented by Project AWARE, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting our ocean planet. Project AWARE relies on support from divers to fund critical conservation. All funds raised will help:

• Fight to stop finning
• Insist on full protections for Critically Endangered sharks
• Negotiate stronger policies to ensure a brighter future for all sharks
