Calypso Dive Against Debris - 18 September 2014

updates

It was great fun joining the Calypso Team this 18th September for Dive Against Debris. IDC candidates, divers and staff all jumped in to remove trash from underwater. Marine debris does more than just spoil the beauty of our oceans; it is also a silent killer, choking and entangling marine animals and smothering coral reefs. Removing it is vital to the health of the reefs.

The team were pleased to see that the local dive site actually did not have much trash. After searching, our group of 14 divers found a total of 34kg of marine debris, including some plastic bags and nylon line that can be particularly damaging. So it was certainly a very worthwhile afternoon.

Well done to everyone that dived and helped with the sorting and data recording. And big thanks to Rene Buob for photos of the event.
