Shark Finning and the EU

updates

Last week`s UK "Sunday Times" carried an article reporting that "More than a third of the shark species that enter British waters are endangered as a result of foreign fishermen hunting them for their fins,"  and "12 of the 30 species of shark that can be found off the British coast are endangered or critically endangered."

Whilst the EU introduced a ban on shark finning in 2003, it did allow the granting of special permits to ships to slice off the fins at sea, providing the meat was also used. Spanish and Portuguese fishing boats have been granted more than 200 of these special licences !!  So, the EU plays a part in the estimated 73 million sharks killed each year.....
