2016 Beach and Ocean Clean-up at Himalaya Bay, Sonora, Mexico

updates

On May 7, 2016, 13 divers and snorkelers collected trash above and below the water at Himalaya Bay, Sonora, Mexico. The Dive Shop held a "Dive Against Debris" weekend with prizes for the most beach trash collected, the most underwater trash collected, and the most unusual piece of trash (above or below water).  This year 352 pounds of trash was collected. The top ten: 942 pieces of styrofoam, 587 plastic bottles, 494 items made of paper, 450 plastic food wrappers, 385 plastic utensils, 341 plastic lids, cups, & straws, 307 plastic bags, 233 glass bottles, 194 aluminum cans, 187 other pieces of plastic (zip ties, toys, etc.). The amount of plastic and styrofoam has increased over the years of doing this same area.  The number of pounds doesn't really tell the story, as most of this trash weights very little!
