Scuba Junkie presents....Mabul Sea Turtle Week 2014

updates

Scuba Junkie is proud to announce the conservation, education and fundraising 'Mabul Sea Turtle Week' on the 23rd-29th May!

The week seeks to promote the importance of Sabah’s marine ecosystems, particularly the sea turtles and the importance of Malaysian efforts in their conservation. The key attraction of the week will be the construction and opening of Mabul’s first turtle rehabilitation centre, which will treat and rehabilitate sick and injured turtles for their release back into the wild – an important new step for turtle conservation on Mabul. There will also be Dive Against Debris reef and beach cleans carried out throughout the week.

Other events include presentations from turtle experts and documentary screenings, environmental efforts such as reef and beach cleans, and community engagement. Fun activities for the week include movie nights, treasure hunts, pub quizzes, a beach party and a night of live band music with a charity auction. Everyone will be involved  - Scuba Junkie guests and staff, local schools, colleges and environmental groups, as well as Mabul residents.

‘Mabul Sea Turtle Week’ has been organised by popular request, as Scuba Junkie recently hosted a ‘Shark Week’ (1st-7th March) dedicated to raising awareness and funds for Sabah’s sharks. Shark Week was an overwhelming success, involving local school children diving and learning about sharks and rays, students, tourists and malaysian visitors learning from shark experts, invited speakers and conservationists, and everyone joining together to do beach and reef cleans. The event had the support of many local and international NGOs and raised over 8,000RM for shark and ray conservation both in Sabah and abroad.

We have now been contacted by more and more schools in the area for opportunities to hold more environmental projects, and as 'World Turtle Day' approaches, we thought this would be a great opportunity to have another educational, fun filled and fundraising week for Sea Turtles.

We plan to have the mix of fundraising events, school children's activities, educational speakers and more!
