Awareness for marine conservation at Nusa Penida Festival 2015

updates

This year the Nusa Penida Festival was held on Nusa Lembongan and Ceningan. This is a festival that involved local cultural aspects, seaweed farming, life music, cultural dances, surf contest and beach clean ups, as well as education on the importance about coastal areas and conservation of marine resources and endangered species.

To have a closer look at the education part about marine conservation they released 100 baby turtles in the ocean and beach and land clean ups throughout the festival on different locations. A big parade consisted of "blow-ups" (local language ogoh ogoh) were shown on the big festival terrain of the most important marine species for the diving and snorkling toerism to tell the community that they have to embrace these lovely creatures.

The special thing about the clean ups is that the whole community was part of it: school children, business owners and other volunteers. Every morning different locations were cleaned. Tons of plastic, sigarette butts, foam boxes, etc. were collected.

It was an absolute spectacular festival and the beauty of it all was that the whole community (local and expats) were working together to preserve this beautiful Blue Paradise!
