Reef Day 2014, June 21st 2014, at Mataking Island, Sabah, Malaysia – “Love the Ocean, Respect the Reef”

updates

2014 will mark the 8th edition of the annual Mataking Reef Day. To celebrate this year theme: “Love the Ocean, Respect the Reef”, the Mataking family, building on their extensive experience and following the success of the previous years, will be joined by 3 schools from Tawau and Semporna, children from Pulau Kalapuan, community leaders, local NGOs, local authorities and VIP guests.

Co organised with WWF Malaysia and with the support of Reef Check Malaysia, this year’s event will focus on 3 distinct axes: Education – Protection - Rehabilitation

Patrick Guillaumin-Galland, Resort Manager explains:  “We will propose awareness talks and games to our young visitors on Mataking, but also this year at Pulau Kalapuan, and we will organize our traditional activities such as beach cleanups and underwater cleanups around Mataking and our neighbouring islands, also involving our in-house guests”.

“But we will also officially launch a new Reef Garden and Coral Adoption project, aimed at rehabilitating some damaged parts of the house reef due to past fish bombing. And we will also carry out our annual reef survey, together with Reef Check Malaysia. “

Events for the day will be as usual both educational and fun and culminate with a Prize Ceremony and a performance from Mataking Staff and Pulau Kalapuan kids.
