PRESS RELEASE

WEST END ECO-FISHING CAMP ANNOUNCES
BRICK FUNDRAISER
  For
 NEW MARINE ECOLOGY CENTER
West End, Grand Bahama Island - The West End Eco-Fishing Camp Association (WEEFCA) is pleased to announce their most ambitious project to date to raise funds for a new marine ecology and environmental center for West Grand Bahama. The purpose of the project is to expand the growing educational programs for kids throughout West End, Eight Mile Rock, Holmes Rock and Freeport.

WEEFCA will celebrate on March 1, 2015 their 7th year of planning a variety of ecology experiences for children 8-16 years of age. Without the generous support of businesses and individuals from across Grand Bahama they could not have offered a curriculum of marine life, swimming, boating, fishing, and environmental conservation. The educational programs were taught to more than 230 children that have graduated from the camp.

The future is looking bright for the organization as they begin the early planning stages to build a state of the art facility - the “West End Marine Ecology Center” (WEMEC). The Center when completed will include the latest technology and offer a safe place year round where kids and adults can learn more about their roles as “caretakers of the earth and living seas”. The center will provide a meeting hall, computer stations, training rooms, marine and agriculture library, science lab, boat dock, swimming pool, kitchen facilities and more.

The Marine Ecology Center will be a two story reinforced clapboard structure with approximately 4,900 square feet of space situated on 2 acres of waterfront property along Bayshore Road. The projected cost to build the center is $3.5 million. Funding a project this size requires a sound plan with a simple concept – bricks. The goal is to offer businesses, the public and friends of the Bahamas (4” x 8”) WEMEC Pathway Paver Bricks engraved with the name of the donor that will be placed along the driveway entering the center and along established walking paths and trails. The price for each brick is $500.00. There are a limited number of WEMEC Founders Bricks (8” x 8”) offered for $1,000.00 each.

According to Marine Ecology Center Project Director Keith Cooper, “West End’s rich history include an array of business opportunities and we have endured some economic challenges that only made us stronger. This time we are challenged to rise above what may seem to be a daunting task and to establish a high tech ecology centre for our youth and adults who are the caretakers of the earth and living seas. Living near the ocean allows us to teach the next generation about respecting the environment and our natural resources.”

This project will have a real positive impact on the children, residents and visitors to our community. The future of West End’s waterfront is the responsibility of each generation yet it is up to us to ensure that the youth are reminded that they are being handed the responsibility of ensuring a sustainable future for their children someday.
