Dive Against Debris Survey October 2014

updates

As divers we have a connection with the oceans. It is our responsibility to protect and sustain our mother of nature.

On last Sunday (Oct 19, 2014), over 30 divers took part in Project AWARE’s dive against debris underwater cleanup project at one of the Hong Kong famous dive site - Ung Kong Islands (甕缸灣). Leading by instructorAndybill Chan (Master Scuba Diver Trainer Instructor) and Janet Summer Chambrier(Instructor), the energetic dive group had collected over 300 pounds of trash from the dive site. The trash were then categorize into plastic / metal / non-recycle. Some fish, crabs and other marine life were released from tangling.

300 pounds trash collected include:-
        ~40% Abandon fish nets
~35% Plastic material (bottle, containers, bags, floaties)
~10% Metals (tins, cans, metal fishing tools)
        ~10% Glass (bottle)
        ~3% Fabric (clothes, bags)
        ~2% Other

The success was a combined effort of Andybill's dive group and local dive centre -IDTC (http://www.idtc.com.hk/about.asp). IDTC who generously provided on-site support and donated basic equipment for this event. A huge thank you to Rommy Cheung who also donated a PADI backpack for lucky draw. And thank you to all participants of this underwater clean up event. It is reassuring to know that people do care.

Lastly, we toss out everything imaginable but rarely thinking twice about where it may end up and what consequences it may have. The trash in our oceans have been slowly strangling and poisoning the very systems that gave us life and there is very few breaths left. You don't have to wait for the next underwater cleanup event to contribute. Everyone person can make a different. I hope in the near future, we can all dive in a trash-free dive site.
