Only divers have the skills to remove underwater marine debris so on Sunday 8th September 2013 at 5pm, 21 local divers got together for a Dive Against Debris event at Stuart Cove’s Dive Bahamas. The location was the coral reef surrounding the Anthony Bell shipwreck. Divers, working in teams, removed roughly 70lbs of debris including fishing line, lures, hooks, foam insulation, plastic pipes, plastic fragments, beverage bottles, rope, cloth and metal items. The most unusual item found was a car wheel rim which was very heavy and was bought up using lift bags. There is still so much fishing line to remove at our dive sites here in the Bahamas so many more clean-up dives will be needed in the furture.

The event was a huge success and I would like to say a big thank you to all the local divers who attended and helped make a difference working towards a cleaner ocean. After the dive  we were all treated to a beautiful sunset! Check out the video by Charlotte Faulkner on youtube:
