Dive Against Debris Event

updates

Sat reflecting on the “morning after the day before”, and what a day!

We camped out at the side of a pretty waterway,  a safety briefing set the ball rolling, and then our willing volunteers splashed into the unknown, the dark forbidding waters of the Sheffield Canal. They proceeded to uncover a never ending stream of debris that had been cluttering up the waterway including an astonishing 38 supermarket trolleys.

The day for once worked with us, with strong warm sunshine throughout, the surface team worked their socks off loading the debris onto trucks to be taken to recycling. The Blue Loop/River Stewardship Company guys headed by Adam were brilliant even providing tea during the day, priceless. Lock-keeper Dave Walker mucked in moving the junk, and the final pleasure was a visit from The Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Vicky Priestley and consort Lloyd, a diver himself; it was great that they showed an interest in the conservation efforts of Project Aware and PADI. The last duty was to present everyone with Project aware certificates with our thanks.

These are just a few of the pics from the day, check out the rest of the website and our Facebook page, Diveworld Sheffield for more.

Thanks to everyone who contributed on the day, way too many to mention, you made it a memorable experience, keep your eyes open for next years project and let us know if youhave any suitable water to protect.
