When Project AWARE Foundation launched the “Marine Debris Awareness Month” last month, we did not hesitate to support the campaign with our own month-long daily beach clean-up project.

For the whole of September, all of our staff came together every morning and cleaned the beaches of Gaya Island and we are happy to report that we have completed it with a lot of hard work and lessons learnt.

Along the way many of our guests also joined in the clean-up and saw first-hand how much marine debris washed up on our shore every morning. We hope it raised some awareness within them that this is a global problem and everyone needs to change their lifestyle, specifically disposing of trash in the bin and use less plastic whenever possible.

Even though our campaign has ended it does not mean we stop our daily cleaning. Even before the campaign started we have our trainees on duty to clean the beach daily and will continue to do so. The trainees are usually made up of PADI Divemaster interns and PADI IDC candidates.

The responsibility to keep the area clean actually falls under the local authorities however as a conservation-minded company we are always happy to assist & that is why we do so on a daily basis all year round.
