Every Little Helps!

A mesh bag fits nicely into a BCD pocket so it's always to hand and every dive can become a "rubbish" dive. Maia wanted a buddy to dive with to take some photos in Pete's Backyard so I tagged along and it wasn't long before I slipped the mesh bag out of my pocket and started picking up bottles and other debris. Unfortunately being a harbour with a high level of yacht and boat traffic, a lot of trash ends up in the sea and sinks to the bottom to be forgotten or to become home to juvenile and small marine animals.

On this dive I decided to concentrate on plastic food wrappers and bottles and after 75 minutes and some help from Maia between shots, we managed to bring back a modest 4kg of plastic. Exiting the water with a recovered brush in hand, I felt like a caretaker of the sea! Which, I suppose, is what we are.

Even a fairly small amount of rubbish is a big step towards cleaning up the ocean and protecting our planet for generations to come so I feel proud to have completed another Dive Against Debris.

Next time we'll get those tyres and other larger items! Happy diving!
