Dive Against Debris Course

updates

Finally we managed to get the Sail Rock dive against debris and survey completed. I have been planning to execute this mission for a long time as the east pinnalce is severely over run by nets at around 27m and deeper.

We started with the presentaion about the dive against debris movement and how we can make a difference out at Sail Rock by bringing the nets back to the surface to dispose of them. We planned our dive and as all participants were experienced divers with 50+ dives we were well set for a great clean up and survey.

The day before I had been down to the east pinnacle identifying possible net removals and the visibility was great, after some planning on the night time with cutting tools, scissors and setting up our sidemount gear for extra safety we made the most indepth plan we could.

When we arrived to Sail Rock all was calm and the visibility looked good and was until we descended to the thermocline and hit 2-3m visibility. This never deters us as we were on a mission. Once we arrived at the east pinnacle and checking out computers for NDL we set to work on the large ammount of net covering the lower parts of the rock.

This turned out to be a larger task than first thought and the net on closer inspection really was one enormous net, so we cut off as much as we could and sent it to the surface using a lift bag/DSMB and a reel. Once we had peeled off as much of the net and cut away a good chunk we decided to call it a day due to low NDL and head back to Sail Rock to fight another day.

We managed to surface with around 6 KG of net and are happy with the survey as we now know it is going to take a few more dives and maybe some technical diving to clear the east pinnacle of nets that are causing probelms to the growth of coral and catching marine life in them.

Once we had finished our survey and logged our net we came on here and logged it as a dive against debris and the net we had bought up, I managed to show some very eager eco warriors/DMTs about using the project AWARE website and got them started on their My Ocean accounts.

The Sail Rock clean ups are to be continued....

Thanks to Rachel, Dave, Tobias and Nico!!! great work dudes!!!
