A Splash of Colour
Following the success of their Fantastic Fish art contest last year, Camel Dive Club decided to hold a Colouring Competition for this year’s World Ocean Day.
World Oceans Day has been celebrated globally every June 8 since its original proposal in 1992 by Canada at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
Camel’s videographer and local tatoo artist, Carlotta Rio created 4 designs – a turtle, a shark, manta ray and Emperor Angelfish. The designs were used to continue support for Hepca’s Turtle Watch program, The Shark trust, the Foundation for the protection of Marine Megafauna and Project AWARE (who launched a new website on World Ocean day). The diving centre records hundreds of sightings for these conservation agencies every year.
The drawings sported text about the conservation of each creature, to ensure it was an educational exercise as well as a lot of fun. Over 100 entries were received from both the French and British schools in Sharm and were displayed in the entrance of the diving centre.
Winners were chosen with criteria based on colouring accuracy and imagination. Three of the entries were very topical, sporting the colours of the Egyptian flag, peace signs and ‘we love Egypt’ in Arabic. Many were collages using glitter, stars and jewels!
Well done to overall winners Ambra (age 6) and Elia (age 7) from the French school and runners up Adam Mohammed (3), Malika (9) and Mia (10). Seif took first prize at the British school with Jeanne (and Ludovico coming in a close second (all aged 7). Prizes for winners included goody bags from the Tribe shop and ice cream from Vanilla!
