Earth Day Dive for Debris

updates

To divers, marine debris is not a remote problem - out of sight, out of mind - as we see first hand the devastating impacts it has on marine life.    This is why the guests and staff at our satellite center at the Grand Rotana hotel came together on Earth Day to give something back to the sea (or should that be take something away?!)

Project AWARE's Dive for Debris campaign is now a year-long project.  But we at Camel Dive Club chose April 22nd to come together and organise an official clean up as a diving center.  We experienced 2 contrasting clean-ups.  The first was with Tamer during the afternoon dive in the Gardens.  Armed with mesh bags and gloves they returned with just ONE piece of plastic.  Good news for the reef!  One guest also found a glass jar but it was covered in coral so they chose to leave it there.

Manager Omar at Grand Rotana finds any excuse to get wet and he buddied up with regular guest Kiril and instructor Valerii on the house reef Eagle Ray Bay.

Project AWARE believe that "all our actions no matter where we live, affect the ocean and the marine life it holds.  Once plastic enters our ocean it persists for decades, killing wildlife, destroying habitats and threatening our health and economy".

Thanks to all that took part, collecting a total of 7 kilograms!
