Blue Ocean Club ~ 2016 Dive Against Debris™ the 1st hit at Bluff Island, Hong Kong
Blue Ocean Club ~ 2016 Dive Against Debris™
On Sunday 29 May 2016, Blue Ocean Club launched the Hong Kong diving season with a “Dive Against Debris™” at Bluff Island near Sai Kung, Hong Kong with 32 divers taking part.
The day was hot and sunny with good sea conditions and water temperature of 26°C. After a visit to a local Tin Hau Temple, the clean-up teams received a briefing about safety and environmental issues and also about the local coral ecosystem before jumping in to start the clean-up.
The dive site, locally known as Ung Kong Wan, is a shallow sandy bay and is popular with local divers as well as pleasure boats. The east side of the bay features an excellent fringing coral reef with a wide variety of hard coral species and associated marine life and is a protected no-anchor zone. Large schools of damselfish and rabbitfish, small groupers and even seahorses were spotted by divers on the day.
Over the course of two dives, the dive teams conducted a successful clean-up operation with 28kg of litter collected. The most common item of litter was plastics and packaging, a stark reminder of the importance of reducing waste and consuming responsibly.
