Blue Guru’s eco-interns, dive staff & owners were all extremely excited after the team’s 1st exploration of our local Koh Phra Thong sites this season.

Juvenile black tip reefs sharks were seen!!

Koh Phra Thong’s mangroves are a breeding ground for a wide range of reef fish. Our local reefs are their nursery ground & we commonly see juvenile reef fish. We are thrilled to now have photographic proof that our local reefs are also a shark nursery. Thanks to eco-intern Laura Debieu and Staff Instructor Daniel van Dongen for the photo.

We’ve expanded the scope of our Ocean Action Project for our 2nd year of surveys. Last season we recorded shark, ray & fishing boat sightings on every dive/snorkel we conducted at Surin & Richelieu Rock (Surin National Park) and Koh Tachai (Similans National Park).

This season we will also be recording sightings at our Koh Phra Thong local & offshore sites, as well as in the National Parks.

We are aiming to collect sufficient data to support implementation of effective conservation measures to protect our shark & ray populations, which are at threat from fishing boats in the Andaman Sea.

We look forward to more shark & ray sightings throughout the season and hopefully regularly seeing juvenile black tip reef sharks at Koh Phra Thong.
