Shark & Turtle Awareness Trip

updates

Last week divers from Switzerland, UK & Singapore joined Blue Guru’s last eco-educational trip of this dive season.

On Day 1 in Similans participants observed & identified 1 green turtle. They also reduced a threat posed to turtles in the area by collecting plastic debris. Data has been submitted to www.seaturtle.org and www.projectaware.org contributing to research on turtle sightings & debris issues.

On Day 2 divers were treated to awesome manta ray sighting over Koh Bon ridge cleaning station. Unfortunately no leopard sharks were seen on the 2 dives at Tachai. This is perhaps indicative of the declining shark population in the Andaman Sea due to overfishing. However divers still enjoyed an amazing abundance & diversity of fish at Tachai Pinnacle – always an exhilarating dive site.

Day 3 included 3 dives at Richelieu Rock – Thailand’s top dive famous for migrating whale shark. Sadly no whale sharks visits today but Richelieu always hosts a multitude of special marine life - harlequin shrimp & pine cone fish were especially exciting finds.

Congratulations to Tatjana, Andreas, Hock Chye & Ke Yun who all completing PADI Distinctive Specialties during the trip: Turtle Awareness, Shark Conservation Diver & Whale Shark.

Blue Guru will be running more eco-educational dive trips next season (Nov-Apr) … watch this space for new event details!
