Dive Against Debris 3/1/14

updates

Today we had a great cleanup at one of our favorite dive spots, the Rompeolas, which also turns out to be one of the more popular spots for locals to hang out and do some fishing. We cleaned over 36,000m2 underwater thanks to the help from our 16 volunteers. The activity went on without a hitch. Everyone made their dive plan, and dove it in buddy teams. We even had Scallywag the Vieques Diving Dog help us out with the cleanup! Around 120lbs of trash were collected and sorted. What was the item we found most? Cans. Specially beer cans and fishing line with hooks and sinkers. In the debris there were all kinds of underwater creatures that were safely removed and returned to their environment. Baby octopus, shrimp, fish, starfish, sea urchins, crabs, fire worms and lots of other small creatures had made their home in the cans and bottles.

This was a great experience for all of us and we certainly hope we get more volunteers and collect less trash in the future!
