cyclone Pam Debris removal progress
Our team of divers has been clearing the debris along the seafront of Port Vila for almost 3 weeks now. We have completed 132 dives and spent collectively nearly 140 hours underwater and covered an area of 5000 square meters. As of today we have removed 6538kg of debris. This includes 1 and a half tonnes of metals and over 3 tonnes of fiberglass. Most of the debris so far has been from boats which were wrecked during the cyclone but there has been other debris such as roofing iron too. The boats, made from aluminium, fiberglass or wood, have broken into pieces and the contents of the boats, including electrical equipment, rigging, sails, ropes, plumbing and cooking equipment has been desposited on the sea floor.
The task is bigger than we thought and we would like to continue for as long as possible. But we can only continue as long as we have the funds to do so. We are very grateful to Project Aware for supporting our project and would also like to thank all those who have donated to help us clean up the mess that was left by TC Pam.
