[July 1st 2016]

Lizard Island Resort Dives against Debris

As part of PROJECT AWARE

Dive against Debris, is organized worldwide by Project AWARE Foundation, a nonprofit organization mobilizing divers to protect the ocean by removing debris every dive they take part in. It’s a year-round, citizen science program to tackle trash beneath the surface and address its negative impacts.

As part of Lizard Islands commitment to protecting the ocean, scuba diving staff will Dive against Debris on July 1st 2016 at Anchor Bay (House Reef). Trained divers will remove debris that is a result of inappropriate distribution of waste and also previous cyclones.  During the dive they will document what they see in an effort to mitigate and prevent the impacts of marine debris.

“Lizard Island is a beautiful, natural and private island and is the northern most resort on the Great Barrier Reef.  This natural beauty is why guests from all over the world visit us. It is also why so many of our staff come to work with us – to be a part of this beauty.  I was not surprised when our head of Marine and Dive came to me proposing that our team took part in Dive against Debris.  It is something that our divers do every time they dive – but to be part of a global effort is exciting and motivating to not just our dive team but to other staff and guests.” says Joe Bann, General Manager of Lizard Island Resort.

Scuba divers are uniquely positioned to tackle the global marine debris issue, to take action every day and prevent debris from remaining in the ocean. For more information on the Dive Against debris event taking place at Lizard Island Resort on July 1st visit our Facebook page or contact Bev at the Marine and Dive department.
