South Oasis, Dahab, Underwater clean up

updates

The South Oasis in Dahab, is a wonderful area, an expense of 3 km of beach dotted with shaded areas thanks to the numerous palm trees. This area is still quite virgin as even though there are popular dive sites and cafes nearby, this particular area does not have any facilities. It is usually used by locals who come at the weekend for a bit of quiet family time. Thanks to this it's reef is pretty well preserved and it's colors much more vibrant than a few hundred meters further where a lot more people come regularly.

Unfortunately, this is true until every summer when suddenly the number of people coming grows fast, from holiday makers wanting a bit of paradise to locals enjoying lazing during the very hot summer days. With the number of people growing, the amount of trash left behind also reaches new heights and this trash consists as usual of a lot of plastic bags which just end up flying and drowning in the sea, getting stuck on the reef.

On 07 February 2015, I organized a clean up with a group of 8 divers in the area north of Golden Blocks. We concentrated on an area of about 500m at depths between 0-12 meters. Thanks to the motivation of the divers who braved a windy and cold day to help, we managed to clear about 60 kilos of waste, mainly plastic bags, nets and fishing lines which are always the most commonly found in Dahab. We also removed a car tire and a 6m water pipe.

This clean up was a success, thanks to the participants so THANK YOU ALL!
