Hi,

My dive club, Scuba Zone have booked a week of diving on a Red Sea liveaboard.

I am enlisting the help of my club frinds and buddies to do some Dives Against Debris while we are out there.  This is essentially a rubbish pick up job (no pun intended).  This is a Project AWARE initiative and will allow us to lead the way as ambassadors for the worlds seas and oceans.

The idea would be that for a certain dive sites (e.g. reefs), we collect anything that shouldn't be in the sea - e.g.  cans of coke, crisp packets, plastic items.  Things that have been assimilated for aquatic life will stay (molusc living in a can etc), but other items we will try to remove safely and bring aboard using mesh bags and lift bags if required.

Once on board, we will all help counting items and classifying what we found.  We will take some group photos of the collected efforts by the team and also post the data to Project AWARE showing the area covered, team sizes, dive times, volume and type of debris collected etc.

For those who want to go a step further and take part in some  study sessions and complete a knowledge review, they can earn a Dive Against Debris Specialty Diver certification which can count towards the PADI Master Scuba Diver rating.

Anyone who takes part will get some of the post dive drinks I will bring and also sleep well in the knowledge that they have helped the aquatic environment!

Happy Diving #keeptheseasclean
